Math
To accompany, support, and extend the rigorous math content and skills students are exposed to on a daily basis, students will receive and be expected to complete math assignments Monday through Friday. Most of these assignments will come from their Everyday Mathematics Homelink Journal. On occasion, students will be assigned in class work from the Everyday Mathematics Journal to complete at home. Students may also bring home additional tasks and assignments that serve as enrichment and scaffolds to the curriculum.
Reading
To promote strong and well rounded readers, students will participate in reading experiences outside of the classroom environment. Beyond the school day, students will be required to read and respond to their reading for at least 30 minutes Monday through Sunday. Reading experiences will be recorded on a reading log. In addition, students will have the opportunity to further respond to their reading by writing literature letters at least once during the week.
Science
Science investigations are conducted in the classroom. However, students will occasionally receive learning tasks that will need to be carried out in the home environment. Such tasks are meant to extend and further assess students’ scientific knowledge and skills.
Social Studies
Social studies activities are carried out in the classroom environment. Periodically, students will need to complete such activities outside of this learning setting. These assignments will give the students the opportunity to expand, assess, and apply crucial knowledge and skills in an authentic and relevant manner.
Word Study
Students will carry out five static sorts six days out of the week to promote mastery of their assigned word study patterns. These sorts will allow students to make important discoveries and to make connections between word study and the reading and writing processes. Students will complete a sort on the following days: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Depending on the academic day, students may have the opportunity to work on and or complete their sort in class. Otherwise, students are expected to complete these assignments outside of the classroom environment. For a complete and descriptive word study schedule, please follow the link below.
Writing
Writing tasks initiated in class will often require the students time and attention in the home environment. The workload for this content area depends on the class’s location within a writing unit. At the beginning of a writing unit, most tasks will be completed in class. Towards the middle and the end of a writing unit, more writing assignments will need to be concluded at home.
